Beefsteak Bi-Color Shisho
Beefsteak Bi-Color Shisho
Description
Shisho, also known as perilla leaf, is a popular Japanese herb that is both edible and an ornamental. If you want a stunner edible plant with leaves ranging from smooth to ruffled and serrated, this is the plant for you. Bi-colored leaves are green on top and purple on the underside. A member of the mint family, shiso has a unique and complex flavor, with notes of mint, basil, cloves, cinnamon, and licorice. The smaller leaves are perfect for salads, sautés, or sushi, while larger leaves can be used as wraps. Very slow to bolt in northern climates.
Shisho can also used in bouquets for its beautiful, textured foliage and unique aroma, acting as a fantastic filler or focal point, but you need to harvest it at the right stage.
NOTE: In some areas, this plant can become invasive. In the North east with a hard frost, we do not need to worry. In addition, Perilla frutescens is toxic when consumed by cattle and other ruminants. Do not plant in areas where these animals may be present.
