Description

Brassica napus

Norabouna is a land-race crop from Japan, a semi-wild member of the Brassica plant family that sends delicious shoots skyward each spring. These shoots are harvested and prepared like broccoli or kale: steamed, stir-fried, or cooked in soups. Howeeve, I have only had the opportunity to try the greens which are great.

The low-demand nature of this versatile crop gained it a reputation in Japan as a food that can stave off famine,

For greens, sow any time. For shoots, sow in summer and overwinter, then harvest shoots in the spring. Requires a protected site to overwinter reliably north of NYC
